Hello Team Bastian!

Randy here, (Bastian’s dad). Lauren and I are excited to announce our Fundraiser for this year. September is Childhood cancer awareness month. This year, we would love to fundraise to be able to purchase toys for the Family house (Fozzy’s toy room) Both boys were lucky to be able to pick toys out when we would have stays at the Family house https://familyhouseinc.org/ways-to-give/donate-to-fozzys-toy-room/ (here’s the link if you wish to donate on your own J)

Our fundraiser this year, is going to be Soccer scarves. The reason for soccer, scarves is to honor, Bastian, and my love for the game.

As most of you know, our kids are named after soccer players. When Lauren and I were stationed in Spain, we fell in love with the name Xabier (Cha-bee-air) who was a well known soccer player in Spain. It was kind of unwritten that our children would be named after soccer players, as long as they could have a Hawaiian middle name. Lauren picked Bastian’s name, after Bastian Schweinsteiger a German soccer player. He now plays for the Chicago Fire soccer team. When it came time to name our daughter, we picked names that were not soccer player names. Naming Hope after a soccer player was a happy accident. The name Hope, signifies our never ending faith, and the Hope that Bastian would one day be healed. Xabi, Bastian and Hope, are all world cup winners.

“In America and around the world, soccer scarves have become the ultimate accessory, not just for function or fashion but for tradition. One of the most popular traditions is for the crowd to raise their scarves above their head, creating a sea of team colors, all while chanting the team’s anthem (diehardscarves.com).”

Soccer scarves show your support for your tam and your love for the game. We chose the colors gray and gold, to show our support. Gray for Brain cancer awareness, and gold for pediatric cancer. It also symbolizes our love for our sweet Bastian. Bastian was my soccer viewing buddy. Before and after his diagnosis, Bastian loved to sit with me and watch the soccer games on TV. He also kept me company on mornings I would wake up early to watch Manchester united. During his stay at UCSF he would watch World cup qualifiers with me. It was nice to have someone who seemed to love soccer as much as I did.
